Classroom Arrangements
Things to consider when arranging the classroom:
Can all students see the board from their desks without having to turn around?
Can students access all of our classroom materials without having to move something?
Can students get out their chair without bumping into a desk or another chair?
Can I move around the classroom with ease? (Without having to squeeze through desks?)
Can I see all of my students from my desk?
Can I see all of my students from the meeting table?
Other options to consider:
Have clear and safe traffic paths
Be sure students have personal space to prevent boundary issue
Use vertical space for display and learning enrichments
Keep active areas distinctly separate from quiet spaces
Materials students use should be visibly stored and accessible
Put away potentially dangerous classroom items (e.g. scissors)
Create activity-specific areas in the classroom
Try teacher's desk in back
Minimize teacher personal effects in the room
Change classroom based on instructional objectives. However, don't change it too often.
Let the students develop some ownership of their classroom space; allow time to adjust and thrive between changes in classroom arrangement.
